Quest for Tanelorn by Bob Haberfield – featured in The Imaginariad Collection
Bob Haberfield (1938–2021) was a self-taught Australian artist best known for his psychedelic and spiritually infused science fiction and fantasy book covers. Rich in Buddhist symbolism, geometric forms, and meditative imagery, his work brought a unique metaphysical depth to the genre, setting it apart from more traditional fantasy art.
His covers—especially for Mayflower’s editions of Michael Moorcock’s novels—are instantly recognisable for their vivid colours, intricate detail, and fusion of Eastern mysticism with cosmic surrealism. Rooted in his spiritual practice, Haberfield’s visionary art remains a defining part of 1970s sci-fi and fantasy illustration.
Ben Haberfield, Bob’s son, has recently published Bob Haberfield: The Man and His Art, a beautifully designed, two-volume slipcased tribute that spans his father’s extraordinary career. A must-have for fans of fantasy art and visual storytelling—discover more about the book here.
