The Eagle and the Nightingales by Fred Gambino – featured in The Imaginariad Collection
Fred Gambino is a British illustrator and concept artist whose career spans more than four decades, covering book illustration, animation, film, and game design. Inspired early on by Doctor Who and the visionary worlds of Gerry Anderson, Gambino studied at the Derby College of Art and Technology before launching into a prolific career in science fiction and fantasy illustration. His work quickly gained recognition, with commissions for publishers such as Penguin, Warner Books, and Little, Brown, illustrating covers for giants like Isaac Asimov and Arthur C. Clarke.
In the 2000s, Gambino shifted into film and television, serving as a concept artist and matte painter for studios including DNA Productions, Rainmaker Entertainment, and Framestore. His credits include the Oscar-nominated Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius, The Ant Bully, Epic Mickey, Guardians of the Galaxy, and Thor: Ragnarok.
His recent return to oils and pencil is showcased in the artwork for his debut novel Dark Shepherd (NewCon Press, 2024), for which he also created the cover art.
